Day of the Endangered Lawyer
The Gazette reports that the Law Society, alongside a network of organisations around the world, has marked the Day of the Endangered Lawyer, which takes place today, by warning that lawyers continue to face systemic persecution for defending human rights in Iran.
Jonathan Goldsmith, chair of the Law Society’s Policy and Regulatory Affairs Committee, also writes a feature in the Gazette about the Day of the Endangered Lawyer and the work done to highlight the plight of lawyers working across the globe.
King’s Counsel
New Law Journal reports that King’s Counsel Appointments has selected 95 new silks, including one solicitor.
Law Society president Nick Emmerson said: “Since 1995, solicitors with higher rights of audience have been eligible to apply for King’s Counsel (KC) status.
“Approximately 217 solicitors have applied, of whom 65 have successfully been appointed.
“We are keen to help eligible solicitors demonstrate their unique skills and experience and are calling for greater recognition of these as part of the qualifying process.”
