Supreme Court ruling on Rwanda policy

Law Society president Nick Emmerson said: “Today’s ruling was a clear and unanimous decision from five independent judges. The government should now switch focus to clearing the existing asylum backlog and tackling the severe lack of capacity in the sector to provide the asylum and immigration advice needed.”

ECtHR interim measures
Solicitors Journal covers our reaction to the announcement from the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) of action it is taking to clarify its procedure relating to interim measures.
Law Society president Nick Emmerson said: “These steps will ensure that the procedure for issuing interim measures is transparent and fair to all parties involved.
“They take place in the context of wider reforms and demonstrate the willingness of the court to listen to the concerns of member states and make reasonable changes where necessary.
Regulation of the profession
New Law Journal reports that the House of Commons Justice Select Committee is set to hear evidence on the regulation of legal professionals. The Law Society will give evidence to the committee on 5 December, alongside the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the Legal Services Board.
Courts protocol
New Law Journal covers a legal thinktank report which suggests magistrates are regularly not following the law when remanded people in custody.
Law Society president Nick Emmerson said: “It is extremely concerning that the JUSTICE report suggests that the law is not being properly applied and that defendants do not understand the decisions being made.”
