PII survey
New Law Journal (£) has published an article by the President of the Law Society of England and Wales detailing the results from our professional indemnity insurance (PII) survey.
Lubna writes: “A key issue we identified is that smaller firms are paying more, as a proportion of turnover, for their PII than larger firms. They are also more likely to switch insurers and end up paying higher premiums, suggesting they are doing so as a matter of necessity, not choice.”
HLPAS scheme
The MoJ’s decision not to distribute physical copies of a leaflet of its HLPAS scheme could undermine its purpose, we told the Gazette.
A Law Society spokesperson said: “Without physical copies of the leaflet, the MoJ will limit the number of people it can reach. It risks overlooking those who need the scheme the most, and reducing the take-up of the service. This decision will further erode the effectiveness of the scheme and fail to support access to early advice.”
Letby set to face retrial
Stuart Nolan, Chair of our Criminal Law Committee, spoke with Times Radio (from 00:41:00) about what a retrial could look like, after serial killer Lucy Letby was granted a retrial on an outstanding charge of attempting to murder a baby girl.
Stuart said: “There’s no way that this will change the sentence she has received, it’s a whole life order.
“It’s very much about the victims and the victims families, and about getting them justice.”
