New board members announced
Solicitors Journal and Inside Conveyancing cover the Law Society’s announcement of four new members appointed to our board, as past members step down from the post. The new independent board members are Larissa Joy, Eileen Schofield, Krishna Vishnubhotla and Kevin Hogarth.
Law Society president Lubna Shuja said: “The Board has a key role in ensuring we represent, support and promote the solicitor’s profession at home and internationally whilst also keeping a focus on public interest.
“Vicky, Penelope, Bill and Judy have been instrumental in this - it has been an absolute pleasure to work alongside them. Their significant contributions are very much recognised by us all.
“I look forward to working with new members Eileen, Larissa, Krishna and Kevin, who bring with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise which will be invaluable to the Law Society.”
SRA consultation on CILEX
Gazette, Gazette Ireland, and Legal Futures cover our reaction to the SRA’s consultation on regulating CILEX members. The SRA board concluded that taking on the regulation of authorised CILEX members “has potential to deliver tangible benefits to consumers of legal services and the wider public.”
However, President Lubna Shuja responded: “While the SRA and CILEX have said they believe that the proposals will benefit consumers, our view is that there is a higher risk of causing greater confusion for when they are choosing the appropriate legal provider to meet their needs.”
New law to force offenders to the dock
Stuart Nolan, chair of our Criminal Law Committee, spoke to BBC Bristol (from 0:52:53) about new powers that force offenders to attend their sentencing hearing.
Legal Pride
Dead Lawyer Society mentions our support for Legal Pride and our LGBTQ+ members.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “For more than 50 years, the legal profession has supported our LGBTQ+ members and their allies during Pride and beyond. Our logo is just one reflection of this.
“Our logo includes the Progressive Pride flag. We include this so we are inclusive of intersex people, represent more LGBTQ+ communities, and reflect the diversity of LGBTQ+ solicitors. We want to ensure that all our members feel represented and recognized within the six colour Rainbow Flag.”
