Law Society Legal News Summary 22 August 2023

Offenders not appearing for sentencing

Stuart Nolan, Chair of our Criminal Law Committee, spoke to BBC West Midlands (from 2:12:40), BBC Radio Hereford & Worcester (from 2:27:16), BBC Radio Merseyside (from 2:39:10) and LBC (from 01:21:08) about offenders not appearing for sentencing and the practical difficulties of compelling them to do so.

This followed outrage over the non-appearance of serial killer nurse Lucy Letby for sentencing to a whole-life term, which is covered by the Gazette.

Justice system woes

Our Policy and Regulatory Affairs Committee Chair, Jonathan Goldsmith, writes in the Gazette about a new blow for our justice system which came in a court in Germany.
