Prison law legal aid
Legal Action Group blog looks at the crisis in prison law legal aid work, as a survey of members from the Association of Prison Lawyers published this month shows that 74% of respondents do not anticipate being prison law legal aid lawyers in three years’ time.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said that increasing the legal aid rates by the minimum recommended 15% for prison law work would be a “starting point” for the government.
In June, the high court granted the Law Society permission to bring a judicial review challenge against the government. The application for permission was made after the government failed to increase criminal defence solicitors’ legal aid rated by the bare minimum 15%, as recommended by Lord Bellamy’s independent review on criminal legal aid.
