Sarah Dwight, a member of our Conveyancing and Land Law Committee, noted that death, divorce and debt keep the market moving, even in the hardest times. “How the debt part will impact the market will be seen as homeowners struggle to pay their mortgages at increased interest rates.”
Building Safety Act
President Lubna Shuja writes in the Gazette about what needs to change for building safety legislation to prevent leaseholders from living in unsafe conditions.
“The complex implications of the legislation and the potential requirements it places on solicitors could be significant,” she said.
“We have been listening to members’ concerns and making sure their views are heard by decision-makers.”

Decaying court infrastructure
The Gazette (pgs 16-19) reports on decaying state of the justice system and cites our research published last year on the court infrastructure.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “We were told of leaking toilets, broken heating, sewage, mould and asbestos, and of air-conditioning units falling from the ceiling.
“A quarter of disabled court users responding to our survey said they did not feel physically secure or safe from harm when attending court.”
Lord Chief Justice retires
Canadian Lawyer and New Zealand Lawyer cover the retirement of Lord Chief Justice Ian Burnett of Maldon.
He will be replaced by Dame Sue Carr, who will take over the role in October. Law Society President described this as a “great step forward for diversity in the senior judiciary.”
