Signing of Memorandum of Understanding
India Education Diary, Affairs Cloud and Times of India continue coverage of the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Law Society of England and Wales, the Bar Council of England and Wales, and the Bar Council of India.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “We are delighted to have signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Bar Council of India. The Bar Council of India’s decision is a significant step forward in this much anticipated development and will create huge opportunities for solicitors and Indian advocates in both countries. It will also give a boost to India’s wider economic ambitions.
“We thank the Bar Council of India for their support in reaching this agreement and look forward to engaging further on the implementation of the regulations.”
Mental Capacity Act
The Gazette reports that the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has begun to raise awareness of the Mental Capacity Act after deciding this was a better approach to helping parents access child savings accounts after the child turns 18 rather than design a new system from scratch.
The Law Society responded to a consultation which would set up small payments scheme that would have enabled parents and carers to access up to £2,500 from their child’s savings without going through the Court of Protection. There was no consensus on how the scheme could be set up and operate safely.
Illegal Migration Bill

Bonn Climate Change Conference
On Tuesday 13 June, the International Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Law Society will co-host a side event at the Bonn Climate Change Conference in Germany, reports Legal News.
Alasdair Cameron, our climate change, planning and environmental policy adviser, will be speaking at the session called – The role of lawyers and law associations in the Global Stocktake: Implementation at a domestic level.
