Climate change guidance

“The effects of climate change – even on legal practices – are wide-ranging and constantly evolving,” said Law Society President Lubna Shuja.
“Solicitors should be aware of this changing landscape and its potential impact upon their organisations, as well as on the legal advice they provide.
“We encourage solicitors to take the initiative to understand and pre-empt the climate legal risks with the help of our guidance. This will ensure they can continue to run their businesses and advise their clients competently and compliantly.”

Criminal court backlogs
The Times (£) covers our concerns over the criminal court backlogs.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “The data cuts through the rhetoric and clearly shows that delays in the criminal justice system aren’t coming down anytime soon.
“In the Magistrates’ Court, the situation continues to deteriorate. 1,666 cases were added to the backlog in February, bringing the total to 343,519. Too many more people are joining the towering backlog of victims, defendants and their families who are waiting in limbo for justice.”
Basic income pilot
The BBC mentions us in a report about some asylum seeker children taking part in the basic income pilot in Wales.
The Law Society says that asylum seekers can be entitled to free legal advice to help with asylum claims if they have little or no money.
Working from home
The Times (£) looks at law firms attitudes towards home working.
A Law Society spokesperson said: “On an average day our offices are well attended and meetings have a mix of in-person and online attendees.”
