Law Society Legal News Summary 31 March 2023

 Civil legal aid deserts

LondonWorld, Petersfield Post, Cornish Times and more than 100 other regional publications cover the Law Society’s release of maps that show the civil legal aid deserts across England and Wales.

Tomorrow marks 10 years since the Legal Aid, Sentencing and Publishment of Offenders Act 2012 (LASPO) - which devastated the legal aid system - came into force.

Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “For rights to be real, everyone who qualifies for state-funded legal advice must be able to get that advice when they need it, so that they can uphold and enforce their rights."

“The survival of these services is in the balance. People can’t get the legal support they need, when they need it.”

Economic Crime Plan 2

The Gazette, Business Fast, Law360, Business Mayor looks at the government’s Economic Crime Plan 2, which aims to tackle illicit finance, and covers the Law Society’s response.

“Solicitors continue to play an important role in the public-private partnership in tackling economic crime,” said Law Society President Lubna Shuja.

“We look forward to continuing our work with the government to deliver the plan through a new approach to public-private prioritisation.”

Full expensing for law firms

The Gazette covers the Law Society calling on the government to extend a tax break to law firms that invest in equipment such as IT.

Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “Extending full expensing to cover law firms would unlock further investment in one of the UK’s most productive sectors.

“Legal services add £60bn to the UK economy annually and employ 1.1% of the UK labour force.”
