India opens up legal services sector 

Legal Cheek, Scottish Legal News, Asian Voice and LawCareers.Net report the Law Society’s reaction to the Bar Council of India publishing regulations to allow the establishment of foreign lawyers and law firms in India.

Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “The Bar Council of India’s decision is a significant step forward in this long-standing issue and will create huge opportunities for solicitors and Indian advocates in both countries.

LSB reserved legal activities list

The Gazette covers news the LSB is to park the issue of amending the list of reserved legal activities after concluding there was not a case to consider reform at this stage.

Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “The Law Society agrees this is not the right time to review reserved legal activities (RLAs). Currently, RLAs can only be carried out by qualified legal professionals regulated by one of the approved regulators under the Legal Services Act 2007.”

Firms shy away from verifying overseas entities

The Gazette reports only 27 law firms in England and Wales have registered to meet new corporate transparency requirements under the Economic Crime (Transparency and Enforcement) Act 2022. A small number of firms have signed up to verify data submitted by overseas entities.

The revelation follows a warning by the Law Society that solicitors could be at risk of prosecution if they sign off submissions that turn out to be untrue.
