100 years of women solicitors
On 18 December, we celebrated 100 years since the first women became solicitors in England and Wales.
The Solicitors Journal details the life of Carrie Morrison, who was the first woman to make it across the line to qualification.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “Carrie Morrison is an inspiration. In 1922, she entered the men-only profession and went on to a career advocating for people facing poverty and injustice in London.”
Lubna Shuja also features in Women in Leadership (page 15-16), where she outlined why 2022 was a landmark year for women in the law.
She said: “It is fair to say that we have come along way since Carrie Morrison broke the mould and entered the formerly male-only profession, but there is still work to be done, especially to ensure women solicitors are retained and offered valuable career progression opportunities.
“Law Society research has found in the year to 31 July 2021, 60% of new admissions were women.”
UK-India Legal Partnership Awards
BW Legal World reports that our President Lubna Shuja was awarded the Carrie Morrison Women Lawyer of the Year Award at the House of Lords in Westminster.
