100 years of women solicitors
The Gazette covers the Law Society’s event to mark 100 years since the first four women solicitors were admitted to the profession.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “Increasing diversity within the legal profession is one of my personal ambitions and one of my formal presidential priorities, and this includes ensuring that women are well represented within all parts of the sector.”
LPA reform Bill
The full text of the Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) reform Bill has been published and will go to second reading in parliament today, reports STEP.
In response to a public consultation last year, we urged the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) that LPA certification should include consideration of a donor’s capacity.
Ministry of Justice courts investment
The Law Society welcomes the MoJ’s £5 million investment to increase court capacity in order to cut the immigration and asylum backlog, as reported in the Gazette.
Law Society President Lubna Shuja said: “It is important that anyone subject to a life-changing decision can have that decision reviewed by an independent court within a reasonable period of time.
“For the 52% who will have their Home Office decisions overturned by a judge, the speed with which justice is served is particularly important.”
