New statistics show Home Office needs urgent overhaul
Gazette Ireland reports our analysis of Home Office statistics showing 148,533 individuals were waiting for a decision from the Home Office on their claim for asylum in the year to September 2022.
Law Society Deputy Vice President Richard Atkinson said: “Far too many people are waiting far too long for a decision on their request for sanctuary in the UK.
“There is also still a problem with the quality of Home Office decision-making – 52 per cent of decisions were overturned when appealed.”
Former QC selection chief in line to lead judicial appointments
The Gazette reports Helen Pitcher OBE, currently chair of the Criminal Cases Review Commission, has been selected to become the next chair of the Judicial Appointments Commission. However, she cannot take on the job until a pre-appointment hearing has been conducted by the House of Commons justice select committee.
The Gazette remarks the Law Society wants statutory consultation, which was the subject of an independent review, abolished. Writing in the Gazette last week, Lubna said the judiciary was still overwhelmingly white and male, particularly at the more senior levels, and urged the JAC to examine its selection process as a whole.
