Clampdown in Iran
The Gazette covers the Law Society’s response to the latest clampdown on human rights lawyers by the Iranian authorities, following information received by the Law Society of those at risk.
Law Society Vice President Nick Emmerson calls for Iran to comply with its international obligations:
“The arrest and detention of these lawyers who work to uphold the rule of law is particularly concerning because it signals a further restriction of the right to legal representation for thousands of people arrested across the country.”

Bill of Rights bill
Dominic Raab was questioned by the Justice Select Committee yesterday, including on the Bill of Rights Bill.
The Gazette, Legal Cheek, Law 360, Company Insight and Property Industry Eye analyse widespread criticism of the bill, and highlight the Law Society’s concern that the bill will weaken the UK’s economic competitiveness and jeopardize UK businesses.
Law Society Vice President, Nick Emmerson, said: “The bill could put the UK at greater risk of being found in breach of the ECHR. This would send a clear message to global businesses that the UK is a riskier place to invest and do business.”

Swiss-UK Travel Agreement
Solicitors Journal, Company Insight, and Dispatchist mention the Law Society in coverage of news the Swiss-UK professional services agreement has been extended until the end of 2025. The extension of the Services Mobility Agreement (SMA) will allow UK lawyers to continue to practise in Switzerland and is welcomed by the Law Society.
