Diversity within law firms
The Times (£) looks at research published this week by the Solicitors Regulation Authority on diversity within law firms.
Law Society president I. Stephanie Boyce said she was "pleased to see that overall diversity within law firms is improving year-on-year, albeit slowly". But she was "concerned at the pace of this change, and at the inequalities within the profession".
Urgent need for criminal legal aid funding
Law Society president I. Stephanie Boyce writes in the Guardian about the urgent need for criminal legal aid funding, responding to the paper's editorial about the criminal court backlog.
"The £135m-a-year funding increase recommended in the independent review of criminal legal aid should be implemented immediately. Otherwise, we fear that criminal defence solicitors will leave at ever faster rates, seriously compromising the government's ability to clear the huge backlog in the criminal courts," she said.
