Law Society awards to be discontinued 

The Gazette reports that our awards are ending after 15 years. 

A Law Society spokesperson said: "As we continually modernise and improve the ways we work we are looking at how we can showcase the work of more members, the diversity of the profession and the roles within it. The decision not to hold our annual awards ceremony in 2022 stems from this approach."
 

Lasting power of attorney 

Melinda Giles, a member of our wills and equity committee spoke to Vanessa Feltz on BBC Radio London (from 42:39) about lasting power of attorney fraud, after a woman almost had her home stolen.
 

Lawyers with disabilities in the spotlight 

An interview with Yasmin Sheikh, vice chair of our lawyers with disabilities committee, was carried across BBC Scotland, Stoke, London, Wales, Berkshire, Nottingham and Shropshire. Yasmin spoke about moves towards greater inclusion in workplaces and the lawyers with disabilities division research into the impact of the pandemic on their members.  
 

Women lawyers working more hours than male counterparts 

City AM picks up a Thomson Reuters report which found women lawyers are working 100 hours more each year than their male counterparts. Amandeep Khasriya, a Law Society women lawyers division committee member, agreed the findings reflect that women may often put in extra time on firm culture initiatives.
 

Low prosecution rates in rape cases 

The Metro covers our evidence to a Home Affairs Select Committee meeting where Ellie Cumbo, our head of public law, spoke about low prosecution rates in rape cases and the investment needed to improve the process.
