Early legal advice for tenants facing repossession
Inside Conveyancing and Landlord Today report our response to a government proposal to extend legal aid for tenants facing repossession to include advice in advance of court proceedings and guidance on finance and welfare benefits.
"We cannot underestimate the value of early legal advice as it can help address problems before they escalate, preventing cases from going to court unnecessarily," said Law Society president I. Stephanie Boyce.
"However, this well-intentioned move may well be hampered by the desperate shortage of legal aid-funded solicitors with the relevant expertise in large swathes of the country which has created housing legal aid deserts, affecting millions of people. Those facing repossession will not be able to access vital legal advice if there is no legal aid provider in their area."
Low rape prosecution rates

Conveyancers who "mis-sold" leasehold advice
MPs have criticised housing developers who recommended particular conveyancing solicitors who did not advise on rising ground rents, reports the Gazette, Legal Futures, and Inside Conveyancing. Labour MP, Justin Madders, claimed advice to go a particular solicitor was "in breach of Law Society guidelines".
