Solicitors Journal and Lexis Nexis (£) report the announced date for the Law Society’s special general meeting on Tuesday 23rd July.
Law Society chief executive officer Ian Jeffery said: ““It is disappointing that PLAG has felt it necessary to take this step. However, the SGM is an opportunity for members to discuss with us the future of the home buying and selling process and how the Society can best represent its members, as changes are made over time to that process, to enhance the experience of consumers.
“There will be a vote on the no confidence motion if one is required on the day, but in any event, we will listen to and carefully consider the views of our members, expressed at the meeting and more widely.
“We have already taken steps to address the strength of feeling expressed by members by postponing compulsory implementation of the updated TA6 form.
“This allows for six months consultation to ensure we understand the full range of member views.”
Post Office (Horizon System) Offences Bill
Birmingham Mail reports that the Post Office (Horizon System) Offences Bill has quashed the convictions of sub-postmasters wrongly accused in the Post Office Horizon IT scandal.
President Nick Emmerson said: “We are pleased that postmasters and others affected by the Post Office/Horizon scandal now have their convictions quashed and can gain access to compensation schemes.
“We reiterate that a piece of legislation as constitutionally significant as this required adequate parliamentary scrutiny time. This bill has now been pushed through both houses at pace and the Law Society remains concerned that it could set a precedent for parliamentary intervention in the justice system.”
